Reading the shape, not the noise
Why we built a demand-for-work index — and the discipline that keeps it honest.
Ask three people whether it's a good time to be a copywriter, a nurse, or an electrician, and you'll get three confident answers — and no way to tell which is right. The conversation about work is loud, anecdotal, and shaped by whoever spoke last. SHIFT exists to replace that noise with something you can check.
SHIFT is a methodology-first index of how demand for work is shifting. For each kind of work, in each market, we count the volume of job advertisements the same way, and then compare that count against the whole basket of work in the same country. We never compare one country's level against another's. The result is a single, honest signal: not whether a field is "good" or "bad", but which direction its demand is moving, and how fast.
We are deliberate about what that signal is not. It is not a count of hires, of open vacancies, or of salaries. It is not a league table that says one country is beating another. And it does not, on its own, explain why demand moved — only that it did. Those limits are not a weakness to hide; they are the reason the number can be trusted.
Method before message
Most commentary starts with a conclusion and reaches for data to support it. We work the other way round. Every figure SHIFT publishes has a definition fixed before the counting began, and a rule that applies to every kind of work equally. We are available to demonstrate how a particular figure was produced. When we don't have enough data to publish an honest series, we say so and leave it out, rather than fill the gap with a guess.
We would rather show less, honestly, than more, loosely.
That discipline shapes everything here. Coverage grows market by market as the data qualifies, so the index widens over time instead of pretending to be complete on day one. Where we offer interpretation, we label it as interpretation. And every reading points back to the methodology, so you can weigh the claim for yourself.
The world of work is changing faster than the language we use to describe it. SHIFT is our attempt to describe it carefully — to read the shape of demand, not the noise around it.
